Salford City announce David Beckham as Ammies new shareholder
Salford City Football Club have confirmed that former Manchester United and England footballer David Beckham has purchased a 10% share of the club. Beckham joins fellow class of 92 members; Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes as a shareholder in the National League side. The club announced the landmark news at a press conference this morning, along with the following video on social media. Upon approval from the FA, Beckham’s arrival will see the class of 92 become majority shareholders in the club, with Peter Lim reducing his share to 40%.Beckham, who had spells with footballing giants Real Madrid and PSG, had this to say on the clubs official website. “It’s a proud moment for me to join Peter Lim and the Class of ’92 lads as an owner of Salford City FC. “It’s a really special club and a special group of people. My early years in Manchester were all spent in Salford. I grew up there in many ways so to be able to finally join the lads and the club today is a great feeling.”The Class of 92 have welcomed Beckham on board with open arms and had the following tosay on his arrival at the Peninsula.”From the very beginning we wanted David to be involved and be with us on this incrediblejourney however circumstances and commitments didn’t allow that.”Now the time is right and is another exciting time in Salford City’s history. It is important to emphasise that nothing will change in the day to day operations of the club but to have us all together was always the vision. We grew up in Salford, carved our careers here and that’swhy we are doing what we are doing at Salford City.”We have grown to love this club and the fans and we would like to welcome David to the club and to becoming part of the Salford City family.” Salford City have also stated that Peter Lim will remain influential in moving the club forward. Beckham’s arrival has been greeted with a flurry of tweets from excited Salford City fans, eager to see one of football’s most famous and influential figures arrive at the Peninsula Stadium. Salford City star Liam Hogan also shared his delight at the news on Twitter, we expect he may be looking for a few free-kick tips from golden balls himself. Beckham’s arrival has sparked rumours that he may be replacing one current shareholder though. The news of Davis’s arrival comes in the same week that Paul Scholes has been linked with the vacant managerial position at his boyhood club, Oldham Athletic. Scholes was at the announcement this morning but had no comment to make on the managerial position. He is still bookies favorite to replace Frankie Bunn at Boundary Park. Fans are already speculating on Twitter that Beckham’s arrival at Salford may see the departure of Scholes.”I’ve made no secret that I want to get back into football… If that’s OAFC I don’t know, there’snothing to report on that… Whether that conflicts with Salford I don’t know the implications ofthat yet.”Only time will tell on the Scholes front, however it is clear that Beckham’s arrival shows ahuge amount of dedication towards getting Salford City into the Football League.
